What impressed me most about this area of Thailand, along the border region, was the poverty. However, there was an innate cheerfulness in the people there along with a willingness to resort to desperate measures as a means to survive. This seems to be a common thread in most communities and individuals I’ve encountered. Poverty breeds desperation; and most desperate people are not inclined towards either civility or even morality.
